shit, i had that blog

okay, my exams are over with for this year and i return to the world of the living from my exile in badly-made pptx lecture slides and /b/. i'm alive! i didn't even slice any of my limbs open this time! i haven't been hospitalised once!

so i have some sugru coming in the post in the next couple weeks, anyway. one of you fine gents recommended it to me as a bioproofer, so i figured i'd give it a try - seems like useful shit to have around, anyway. if it doesn't work there's always glue guns.

speaking of which, i have several things on the go this summer, one of which is the continued hackage of the Northpaw; another involves my removing the last experimentally-placed node from the back of my right hand (as stated, it just didn't fucking work out) and re-siting it or attempting to do so in the little finger of the same hand, my left being complete for now. for this i will need some proper surgical sterilisation - TechniCare, ideally - and i'm out. anyone know where to get their grubby biohacker hands on some?

of course, ethanol is fine too. i'd just rather deal with less searing, flesh-burning pain than i need to. might give some lidocaine a shot too, although the doc thinks it won't work in the fingertips (no idea why not). thoughts? you guys want me to video this one?

lastly, my second article for H+ has been taken in and is probably currently getting anal-raped by the copy-editors. expect forthcoming.

hey, dunno what your doc said about lidocaine exactly but I seem to remember local anaestheric in the fingers being a complicated thing since some of them contain adrenaline which constricts the blood vessels, and in something the size of a finger there can be a danger of cutting off the blood supply a bit too much. A quick google gave me this though: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11420511
so looks like you might be ok. you can easily tourniquet the finger using a rubber glove finger with the end cut off.

had another little look round for finger anaesthesia techniques and found this: http://www.nda.ox.ac.uk/wfsa/html/u02/u02_007.htm
dunno if it's helpful or not, looks like you have to stick a needle nearly all the way through your finger in order to get it right.

I had just cut my finger on some glass. The emergency room used lidocaine before they put in my stitches.

King - yeah, she wasn't very precise, just said it wouldn't work. to be honest i think she was trying to discourage my gender-confused ass, which manifestly won't work. thanks for the links.

IX - shit, son, you OK? hate finger injuries. and i thought they used caine in hospitals... she must've been bullshitting me in a well-intentioned sort of way.

Hardly a problem. It left a nice L shaped scar. First time I got to see gushing blood in person. Life time stitch count up to 32.

Ix - that's a pretty good stitch count, there. i can't remember mine. glad you're fine, anyway; iirc, you're in the military (right?) so it was probably a pretty dumb question in the first place...

Oh, you know our wretched minds love to see your selfdestructive antics, so yes, video would be cool...
Making it fit into the finger must be an absolute bitch though, seeing as how large the nodes are compared to the finger :/

Also, don't listen to the doc. It's all lies, lies, lies ;P
Keep us posted with the Northpaw, it's a really interesting project, and I'd love to see it enter the mainstream someday (once a weekly visit to the local biohacker is normal ;))
You're like a volunteer space monkey. Fly into space, my friend, where no monkey has ever gone before!

Max - thanks, i think. will do. and the nodes are only 4mm diameter things, 1 or 2mm high - they're not that big. it's the pain that's the problem.
