implant synergy, part 1: reed sensors

a reed sensor is a little component that detects the presence or absence of a magnet. i've been blethering with a colleague about using them in conjunction with the magnets in my hands - it has interesting applications; like if you had three of them (say two on your keyboard and one on the monitor of your laptop) you could use them to interpolate the position of your hands in real time. that is, you could program the laptop to only switch the backlight on when you're actually using it, or to lock the screen as soon as you step away.

what's even cooler is that you can factor in the RFID chip in my hand, too. that is, you could program the book not just to only let people in when they show an RFID tag with my hex code, but also to then make sure they have the same magnetic configuration i do (which would be pretty hard to fake.)

i'm gonna have to get some of these things to play with. sayonara, wages.

Would it be possible to have public/private key enryption, where the RFID can be read as the public key, and the private key be read from one's implant studded arms waved in a certain way? Like a warlock?

( This is hand waving both literally and metaphorically. To set up the private key, one would need a machine which factors large numbers while one contorts one's self. ).

i'm actually working on something similar, though involving less gestures (on accounta i'm not sure how sensitive the sensors actually are.)

what i'm gonna try and implement is, i want the RFID token as the public key, but i was gonna make the private key something a little more biospecific - i was gonna use a flat pad with reed sensors and a fingerprint reader to get a configuration of my hand, and use that.

of course, i gotta build said contraption, so it's a pipedream for now. any better ideas?

That sounds a lot more sensible than my idea! How does the fingerprint reader interact with the reed sensor?

actually, it doesn't interact directly - its "hand configuration" would be a hash, say, of the fingerprint binary and the reed sensor readings.

it's a total pipedream though, bro, i don't have that kind of gear at my disposal. one day.

Hope you meanwhile know that a reed sensor is more like a mechanical switch. It can not dedect the amount of magnetic flux, it just switches on or off.

yeah, i know. it makes them a lot less useful, but still good, if i had any. le sigh.

if you want to measure arbitrary amounts of magnetism you could try looking into a hall effect sensor
